Societal change should affect the purpose of education. Change in education, however, has been slower than change throughout society. Corporate budgets are stressed in unprecedented ways. Unemployment, declining home values, and stricter lending create an economic climate unlike any seen since the Great Depression. The achievement and equity challenge will not only apply to those who have never been economically empowered, but also those who’ve lost it. We’ve both feared and benefitted from foreign competition. The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Germany and Japan receive much less attention as global competitors, and India and China are receiving unfavorable international attention due to environmental abuses and human rights violations. Our education system will remain strong amid continued challenges. This is because of our moral purpose; longstanding commitments to things beyond self.
